Ridgefield rejects recall for Mayor Anthony Suarez
The voters have once again spoken and say No to recall, Suarez stays as Mayor
Ridgefield, NJ - (August 18, 2010) - Last night in a close recall election, Anthony Suarez retained his seat as mayor of Ridgefield. Despite an effort lead by former Republican councilman and defeated 2007 mayoral candidate Robert Avery, voters rejected a recall effort to throw their mayor out of office.
Upon hearing the election results, Mayor Suarez thanked the voters, his family, friends and his supporters for believing in him and the belief "innocent until proven guilty". Suarez still faces a trial on federal corruption charges next month where his fate will be determined in a court of law and where he will be given the opportunity to defend himself and his reputation.
"I am grateful to the voters who saw through my opponents' tact of besmirching my long established reputation in Ridgefield and giving me a fair chance to defend myself through the courts and not through an unwanted and costly political campaign", Suarez said
"Unfortunately, the Republicans wasted taxpayers' dollars in a dire time our town is in real tough financial shape. They made residents pay for this election in an attempt to achieve their own agenda after several tries they failed again. Now maybe they can get back to the task at hand focusing on Ridgefield residents, taxes and other more important municipal matters." a joyful Suarez announced to a jubilant celebratory supporters. "I hope they will reimburse the town for the cost of this unnecessary election"
Before the election results were announced last night, Republicans were prematurely celebrating thinking they had won, however when the final results were revealed, Robert Avery ridiculed Ridgefield voters by questioning their IQs and continued to insult voters saying: "I am sad to announce that Ridgefield has failed it's collective intelligence". Also see quote from politikernj.com below.Suarez also noted despite the several unsuccessful Republican attempts at compiling their recall petitions, the borough clerk rejecting their petitions twice, and finally having the courts approve this recall election, the opposition could not come close to matching the 1,800 names they originally collected, clearly indicating their efforts were always problematic.
With the recall, the second question on the ballot - which one of the three other candidate choices should replace the mayor, becomes null and void and does not matter.
